Incorporating Erin Hunter in the Classroom

Using Erin Hunter in the classroom would bring new perspectives to challenge students writing. The Warriors series, as well as the Seekers series, is written from animals' perspectives. Writing from a human's perspective is easy because we are humans. We know what our lives are like better than any other species. However, writing from a cat or bear's perspective is completely different and can also bring about challenges. Encouraging students to write from an animal's perspective will help develop their writing a lot. They would have to imagine they were the animal in order to write from its perspective. It also gives students a break from the more serious things they usually write for classes and gives them a chance to be creative.

In my Teaching Writing class, we're reading Wondrous Words by Katie Wood Ray. In her book, Katie Wood Ray gives tips on effective tools for writing, which are summarized here: http://people.bridgewater.edu/~atrupe/ENG315/ways-words.htm

Although the authors who use the pen name Erin Hunter do not use any of these tools in their books, that does not mean works by Erin Hunter aren't good examples of writing. They challenge students to think outside of their world and to embrace creativity.
